Survey Shows Strong UK Support for Under-16 Social Media Ban

Date:

A recent survey has shed light on public opinions regarding the potential implementation of a social media prohibition for adolescents nationwide in the UK, following a decisive vote by the House of Lords in favor of such a ban for individuals under 16 years old.

The survey indicates strong support for prohibiting under-16s from accessing social media platforms across the UK. However, this support varies across different regions, with lower levels of endorsement in parts of the North and Scotland, and significant opposition observed in London. Australia has already enforced restrictions on children accessing social media, prompting 80% of surveyed Britons to advocate for a similar approach in the UK due to concerns over excessive screen time among young teenagers.

The North East emerged as the region with the highest support for restricting access to potentially addictive and harmful social media content, with 86% of respondents in favor of a ban, while only 3% opposed the idea, with 11% undecided.

Following the North East, Wales (85%) and the East Midlands (83%) also exhibited strong backing for a ban. Conversely, London showed the highest level of acceptance towards young teenagers using social media, with 13% expressing opposition to a ban.

Despite regional variations, a significant majority of Londoners (75%) expressed support for keeping under-16s away from social media platforms, highlighting widespread backing for the proposed ban. Support for limiting social media usage was slightly below the national average in the North West (77%) and Scotland (77%).

The Australian initiative, which prohibits under-16s from accessing content on major social media platforms including Facebook, X, Snapchat, and Instagram, serves as a global precedent. The move was motivated by concerns that social media companies are contributing to harmful behaviors such as addiction, radicalization, self-harm, and even suicide.

A recent poll conducted by Yonder for Reach revealed that the vast majority of UK residents welcome the proposed ban, with 64% expressing concerns about the content children may encounter during screen time. Notably, people in Northern Ireland displayed the highest level of worry (79%) regarding their children’s smartphone activities, while a minority (13%) reported no concerns.

Parents in Yorkshire and the Humber were found to be the least worried about their children’s online activities on smartphones, with only 57% expressing concerns. Concerns over inappropriate content exposure dominated worries about screen time across most regions, except in Yorkshire and the Humber, Wales, and the East of England, where online grooming was a more significant concern.

Additionally, the survey highlighted that children in the North West receive their first smartphones at a younger age compared to the national average, with an average age of nine years, seven months, and 17 days. On the other hand, children in London tend to receive their first smartphones at a later age of 11 years, 2 months, and 23 days, while those in the West Midlands typically acquire their devices only four days earlier.
