A teacher at a prestigious boarding school with an annual tuition fee of £46,000 has been prohibited from teaching duties due to excessive and inappropriate communication with a teenage student outside of school hours. James Samson, aged 46 and a father of two, who served as the head of geography and a form tutor at Luckley House School in Berkshire, continuously messaged the student late at night over a span of a year, following a request for her phone number.
The messages from Samson to the student contained concerning content, such as references to meeting in his room for revision and expressing enjoyment when she was present. Additionally, he inquired about her personal matters, invited her to the leisure center, and communicated with her on occasions like Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, which violated school regulations.
The student described the messages as peculiar and not in line with typical teacher behavior, causing her discomfort and suspicion. Following a thorough investigation prompted by concerns raised in June 2024, Samson was dismissed from his position about a month later. Witnesses testified that the extent of the messages exceeded 40 pages, with one individual suggesting that Samson’s actions reflected early signs of grooming.
The disciplinary panel concluded that Samson’s conduct breached boundaries and was highly inappropriate, failing to meet the expected standards of professionalism. The school’s policy strictly prohibits teachers from sharing personal contact information with students and emphasizes communication through official school channels only. The panel deemed Samson’s actions as serious misconduct and significantly below the acceptable standards for an educator.
In light of these findings, the panel determined that Samson’s behavior constituted a severe breach of professional conduct, indicating a significant deviation from the ethical standards demanded in the teaching profession.
