A teen tragically lost his life in a drink-driving accident after being served alcohol at a pub by the establishment’s landlord. Anthony Wiazcek provided Hector Eccles, 16, with five pints of lager, knowing he was underage. Following the alcohol consumption, Hector got on his quad bike with a friend, leading to a fatal crash in a field despite efforts from paramedics to save him.
Wiazcek, who was the sole bartender that night, was found guilty of selling alcohol to a minor and was fined £660, with his personal alcohol license suspended for three months. The court revealed that Wiazcek had a long-standing relationship with Hector, having known him since childhood and being aware of his age when serving him at the pub in Lancashire on March 30, 2024.
Another 17-year-old involved in the accident escaped with minor injuries. Wiazcek, 65, faced charges for selling alcohol to a minor as the premises license holder and Designated Premises Supervisor. After a trial, he was convicted and ordered to pay a fine, victim surcharge, and prosecution costs.
In a heart-wrenching statement, Hector’s mother expressed the profound impact of her son’s death, describing the devastation and emptiness she feels daily. She lamented the missed milestones and the pain of losing a vibrant young life due to a lack of care that fateful night.
Authorities, represented by Licensing Sergeant Steve Dundon, emphasized the importance of responsible alcohol sales and enforcement to prevent such tragedies. Dundon stressed the need for strict controls and compliance with regulations in licensed premises to avoid irresponsible practices leading to severe consequences.
