Teen in Bomb Hoax Court Drama: Clothing Removal Interrupts Hearing

Date:

A teenager facing charges related to a bomb hoax that led to the evacuation of a Peter Kay comedy show had a disruptive moment during a court hearing. Omar Majed, 19, had to be escorted out of the hearing at Birmingham Crown Court when he began removing his prison-issued clothing while appearing via video link from HMP Brinsford.

During the hearing, Judge Andrew Smith KC was interrupted by Majed’s actions, leading to the court session being cut short. The judge mentioned that due to the defendant’s behavior and the need for psychiatric evaluations, no plea was entered, and the hearing was adjourned.

Majed, a resident of Saltley, Birmingham, was charged with communicating false information to the authorities, as per the Criminal Law Act. Another hearing for his case management was scheduled for July 27, with a trial set for November 3, lasting two weeks.

The incident at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham on May 1 caused the show’s cancellation after an evacuation was ordered when a suspicious bag was reported. West Midlands Police confirmed that no threat was found after searches were conducted. The show was part of Peter Kay’s national tour, “Better Late Than Never,” where all proceeds are to be donated to 12 cancer charities.
