A teenage girl in the Netherlands, Milou Verhoof, made a decision to undergo euthanasia at the age of 17. Supported by her parents, she sought the assistance of Dr. Menno Oosterhoff, a psychiatrist known for helping young individuals with mental health challenges, including facilitating end-of-life choices.
Milou had faced significant traumas in her life, such as her brother’s severe illness when she was 11 and being a victim of rape at 13, leading to deep psychological distress. Despite her struggles, including self-harm and failed suicide attempts, she persisted in her desire to end her life through euthanasia. After encountering obstacles with a previous psychiatrist, she connected with Dr. Oosterhoff, who eventually fulfilled her wish.
The euthanasia procedure took place in Milou’s childhood room, where the psychiatrist administered the lethal injection. Before her passing, she meticulously prepared for the moment, even selecting her outfit for the burial. Her mother, Mireille Verhoof, expressed gratitude towards Dr. Oosterhoff for his careful handling of the situation, stating that it was the right decision for Milou and their family.
Following Milou’s death, a documentary titled ‘Milou’s Battle Continues’ shed light on her story and sparked a heated debate on euthanasia regulations for young individuals. While euthanasia is legal in the Netherlands, the practice has been primarily associated with terminal physical illnesses. However, there has been a notable increase in cases citing psychological suffering as the main reason for seeking euthanasia.
Dr. Oosterhoff’s work has drawn both praise and criticism, with supporters viewing him as a compassionate figure providing relief to those in unbearable mental anguish. His approach, which includes assisting patients with severe mental conditions in their end-of-life choices, has positioned him as a prominent advocate for psychiatric euthanasia in the country.
