Kurt Van Dyke, 66, was discovered under his bed with a sheet covering his head and a knife nearby. His girlfriend, known as Arroyo, was subjected to a harrowing experience as armed intruders tied her up, assaulted her, and stole valuables along with their car.
The incident, which occurred in a typically peaceful town, has deeply unsettled the local residents. Roger Sams of Costa Rica’s Southern Caribbean Chamber of Tourism and Commerce expressed sorrow over the sudden violence in a usually serene environment.
Van Dyke, a well-known figure in both Costa Rica and California, was recognized for his contributions to the surfing scene, particularly in the Puerto Viejo area. His passion for surfing led him to Costa Rica in the 1980s, where he gained fame for conquering the challenging Salsa Brava break.
With a family background rooted in surfing, including his father’s legacy as a pioneering surfer and his mother’s advocacy for female surfers, Van Dyke was part of a surfing dynasty. Authorities are diligently investigating the crime scene, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to unravel the chain of events.
