Teen’s Suicide After Workplace Rape Allegations: Injustice Unveiled

Date:

A teenager described as “vulnerable” tragically took her own life following allegations of workplace rape, as revealed in a recent inquest. The family of Lauren Hewson, who made an initial suicide attempt on her 18th birthday, expressed deep disappointment over the closure of the Cumbria police investigation, labeling it a significant injustice. The inquest disclosed that she was sexually assaulted and raped by a former employee while serving as an apprentice at BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

Authorities disclosed that a man was arrested and subsequently released on bail, but no legal charges were filed due to insufficient evidence. BAE Systems emphasized its implementation of robust safeguarding measures to ensure the well-being of apprentices.

During the inquest, Lauren’s sister, Bethany Hewson, lamented the perceived miscarriage of justice, both in terms of the perpetrator’s freedom and the employer’s failure to protect a vulnerable young individual. She highlighted that her sister had flourished into an independent young woman before experiencing a drastic behavioral change indicating distress.

Reports indicated that Lauren confided in her family about the abuse, prompting police involvement. Tragically, on her 18th birthday, she attempted suicide and was hospitalized, only to be discharged after stating she did not intend to harm herself further. A week later, she was found deceased in her room.

The coroner ruled her death as intentional suicide, noting that the serious allegations made by Lauren significantly impacted her mental state. The family criticized BAE Systems for inadequately safeguarding the apprentice, potentially preventing her from seeking help.

Following the inquest, a spokesperson from BAE Systems extended condolences to Lauren’s family and reiterated the company’s commitment to employee safety through rigorous safeguarding protocols. Cumbria Police confirmed the arrest of a 30-year-old man on suspicion of rape but stated that the investigation did not meet the evidentiary threshold for pressing charges.
