“Thailand vacation assault: Ex-businessman attacks wife”

Date:

During a luxurious five-star vacation in Thailand, a former businessman under the influence of alcohol viciously assaulted his wife, as disclosed in court. David Turner, aged 61, confessed to the attack, resulting in actual bodily harm, at the Le Meridien Khao Lak Resort and Spa on Thailand’s west coast on July 4, 2024.

The victim, who endured strangulation, head punches, and leg kicks, recounted Turner’s aggressive behavior as he yelled and screamed while attacking her at the Hull Crown Court. She expressed living through a nightmare and fearing for her life even after obtaining a non-molestation order, afraid that Turner may harm her further.

According to the prosecution by Stephen Welch, Turner and his wife were holidaying in Thailand alongside their adult son and Turner’s father. Turner, intoxicated from cocktails, disappeared momentarily before being discovered unwell in a bathroom. Upon his wife’s attempt to assist him, Turner falsely accused her of disappearing, leading to a violent confrontation where he physically assaulted her.

The victim detailed enduring multiple assaults, including being strangled, kicked, and hit in the head by Turner, who also menaced her with a knife. The traumatic incident left her with severe bruises on her head, face, body, and limbs. After returning from Thailand, Turner, previously from Hull and Beverley, was apprehended by authorities but remained silent during police questioning, with no prior criminal record.

The victim shared the profound emotional impact of the assault, mentioning struggles with anxiety, nightmares, and an inability to resume work for an extended period. Turner, represented by Julia Baggs, expressed deep remorse for his actions, citing the incident as out of character after nearly three decades of marriage and highlighting his positive attributes as described by references.

Despite Turner’s remorse, he received a 20-month suspended prison sentence, 200 hours of community service, participation in a rehabilitation program, and a restraining order, coupled with a compensation payment and a victim surcharge. The court’s decision aimed at addressing the gravity of the offense while providing Turner with an opportunity for rehabilitation.
