Tragic Avalanche Claims Ten Lives in California Ski Tragedy

Date:

Two additional skiers have tragically lost their lives following a recent avalanche that claimed the lives of eight individuals during a ski expedition.

Emergency services swiftly responded to two separate fatal ski incidents at Heavenly Mountain Resort in Lake Tahoe, situated on the California-Nevada border on Friday morning. Authorities confirmed that both incidents occurred independently but occurred around 11:55 am at Boulder Lodge on the Nevada side of the resort.

The initial incident involved a 33-year-old man who was involved in an accident on the intermediate Orion trail, as relayed by a resort spokesperson to South Tahoe Now. The second incident involved a 58-year-old man who experienced a severe medical episode on the Tamarack Return trail.

Despite the immediate response from ski patrol and paramedics, both men were pronounced deceased at the scene.

This tragic event unfolded only a few days after eight individuals, comprising six tourists and two guides, succumbed to an avalanche during a backcountry excursion near Castle Peak in California’s Nevada County. One of the guides is currently missing and presumed deceased, while the surviving six individuals, aged between 30 and 55, managed to endure the ordeal.

Among the victims of the avalanche were six esteemed women – Carrie Atkin, Liz Clabaugh, Danielle Keatley, Kate Morse, Caroline Sekar, and Kate Vitt – who were not only adept backcountry skiers but also cherished wives, mothers, and close companions. Their families described them as “extraordinary women” united by their passion for the outdoors, residing in the San Francisco Bay Area, Idaho, and the vicinity of Lake Tahoe.

The group of 15 skiers embarked on their journey amidst a severe winter storm ravaging the West Coast. The region is renowned for receiving nearly 10 meters of snow annually, according to the Truckee Donner Land Trust, which oversees the collection of huts near Frog Lake where the group was lodging.

Prior to the expedition, the Sierra Avalanche Center had issued an avalanche watch due to the high risk of significant avalanches. The trek was tailored for intermediate to expert skiers, as indicated on the tour company’s website.

Blackbird Mountain Guides, the employer of the four guides, initiated an inquiry into the calamity and mourned the loss of three of their guides.
