Tragic Milan Tram Derailment Claims Two Lives

Date:

A tragic incident unfolded in central Milan, Italy, as a crowded tram derailed, claiming the lives of two individuals. The horrifying moment was captured on video, showing a food delivery cyclist and a pedestrian fleeing for safety as the tram tilted and crashed onto its side, with part of it colliding into a nearby building, trapping numerous passengers aboard.

The victims of the crash were identified as 59-year-old Ferdinando Favia from Vigevano and 58-year-old Abdou Kari Toure, originally from Senegal. Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene, where injured pedestrians, including those trapped under the tram, were rushed to Niguarda Hospital for treatment.

The fatal incident occurred on Viale Vittorio Veneto in Milan as the number 9 tram, en route from Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza Oberdan, derailed around 4 pm local time. Eyewitnesses recounted the chaos as people were stuck on the tracks, and sadly, a passenger onboard and a pedestrian lost their lives in the derailment.

The mishap coincided with Milan’s hosting of seasonal fashion events, sandwiched between the Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games. Authorities have launched an investigation into the tragic accident, exploring the possibility of human error. Milan Mayor Beppe Sala hinted at a potential lapse on the part of the experienced tram driver, who may have failed to maintain the correct path, speculating that health issues could have contributed to the derailment.

Passengers onboard the tram described the harrowing experience, with one individual likening it to an earthquake, recounting injuries and chaos within the tram. Another passenger detailed the moment the tram veered off course, accelerated, and collided with a building, causing passengers to be thrown around inside.
