A young woman, Sumbul Ari, took matters into her own hands and self-diagnosed cancer at the age of 26 after doctors dismissed her severe skin itchiness as a simple case of dry skin that required moisturizing. Sumbul had been battling intense symptoms for 11 months, describing the sensation as if things were crawling under her skin, leading to sleepless nights for seven consecutive months.
Despite her distressing condition, medical professionals attributed her symptoms to dry skin and suggested moisturizing. Feeling that something more serious was affecting her health, Sumbul turned to online resources where she was alarmed to discover that her symptoms aligned with a type of cancer. Subsequently, medical confirmation validated her concerns.
In addition to the relentless itching, Sumbul experienced night sweats, fatigue, and a loss of appetite. She initially suspected her symptoms were due to household products, as advised by her doctors. However, her condition persisted, and it was not until she noticed a lump on her neck that she connected the dots to cancer, specifically Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Following her online research, Sumbul sought medical consultation to address her suspicions. After a tearful plea for further investigation, she underwent tests and received a formal diagnosis on March 17, confirming enlarged lymph nodes consistent with lymphoma. Subsequent procedures, including a biopsy and PET scan, led to the official diagnosis.
Sumbul’s cancer was identified between stages two and three, with enlarged lymph nodes detected in her neck, chest, and spleen. She has completed one round of chemotherapy with five more to go. Expressing relief at being heard and validated, she emphasizes the importance of advocating for oneself when health concerns are dismissed.
