A tragic incident unfolded in Chakwal, Punjab, when a 9-year-old girl, Hania Ahmed, lost her life as police officers mistakenly fired on the vehicle carrying her family, believing them to be jewel robbers. The Ahmed family, hailing from Perth, Australia, had visited the home of Dr. Sindra Khan’s uncle, Ali Ejaz, where they encountered two robbers demanding their jewelry. Succumbing to the robbers’ demands, the family handed over valuables worth approximately £3,937.
Following the robbery, a confrontation ensued between the robbers and a police officer, leading to an exchange of gunfire before the suspects fled on a motorcycle. Tragically, the police misidentified the family’s car as the getaway vehicle and opened fire on it. As a result, Hania’s father, Adeel Ahmed, managed to drive to the relative’s home but lost control, leading to a fatal crash.
While Hania lost her life, her father and brother were taken to Benazir Bhutto Hospital in Rawalpindi for treatment, with her mother escaping unharmed. The Pakistani Association’s general secretary, Asim Chaudhry, expressed shock over the incident, especially the loss of the young girl.
An investigation is underway, with a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) established to uncover the truth behind the tragic events. The family is receiving support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with condolences extended during this difficult period. Additionally, the two robbery suspects were reported to have been killed during a police encounter.
In light of the incident, one police officer has been arrested pending further inquiry, as authorities strive to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the untimely death of Hania Ahmed.
