An investigation into the demise of a woman and her disabled eight-year-old daughter concluded that the mother took the child’s life before ending her own. Emergency services discovered the bodies of Martina Karos, 40, and eight-year-old Eleni Edwards at their residence in Kersal, Salford, on September 23, 2024, after being alerted when Eleni did not attend school. The inquests for both individuals occurred concurrently at Bolton Coroner’s Court.
After three days of testimony, coroner Peter Sigee determined that Ms. Karos committed suicide and that Eleni was unlawfully killed. According to Manchester Evening News, Sigee stated, “Ms. Karos chose to place herself and her daughter in a situation where they succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning with the intent of ending their lives.” He added that Martina was Eleni’s sole caregiver, and despite receiving support from family, friends, and professionals, she felt extreme loneliness.
The coroner did not find any deficiencies in the care provided to the mother and daughter. He ruled out making a report on preventing future deaths in this case. Martina’s mental health deteriorated in late 2023, leading to suicidal thoughts. Despite showing improvement in the summer and fall of 2024, she ultimately decided to end her life and that of her daughter. Eleni, who had severe disabilities, was under a child protection plan at the time of their deaths due to concerns about emotional harm.
There were no immediate red flags reported by professionals overseeing Martina and Eleni, and it was determined that the professionals did not contribute to the tragedy. If you need emotional support, you can contact the Samaritans helpline at 116 123 or visit their website for assistance.
