An 18-month-old girl tragically passed away after being left in a nursery transport vehicle for an extended period of time.
The child, identified as Sofia, was collected around 8 am for nursery in Portugal but was inadvertently left inside the vehicle unnoticed by nursery staff until her mother arrived later that day to pick her up.
Sofia’s grandmother revealed that the toddler was consistently dropped off at the same time daily, with each drop-off and arrival being recorded. However, on this particular day, there was no record of her arrival.
Although Sofia attended a nursery in the Pragal area, the vehicle was found parked outside a different site managed by the same institution on Avenida do Cristo Rei.
Upon her mother’s arrival to collect Sofia, staff were unaware of the child’s whereabouts, prompting them to break into the vehicle to rescue her. Despite efforts by emergency responders to revive her, Sofia was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are treating the incident as a case of suspected negligence, as the child was unknowingly left inside the school transport vehicle. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sofia’s death has been initiated by Portugal’s Judicial Police.
The head of the Commission for the Protection of Crime Victims emphasized that the situation appeared to stem from negligence rather than deliberate harm. He stressed the need for a thorough investigation into the lapse in protocol that led to the tragic outcome.
He further noted that the van was parked at a different nursery than the one Sofia attended, highlighting a failure to ensure all children were safely inside the school premises. He emphasized the importance of accountability and proper procedures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Expressing sympathy for all affected parties, the official acknowledged the severe impact on the child’s family, school staff, and the wider community due to the heartbreaking loss.
