A lone individual armed with multiple weapons attempted to breach a Washington dinner attended by Donald Trump, described as a “lone wolf whack job” by the US president. The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner was thrown into chaos on Saturday night as Trump, a previous target of assassination attempts, was quickly evacuated by secret service agents.
During the incident, one officer was shot but protected by a bulletproof vest and was subsequently taken to the hospital. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was found carrying a shotgun and handgun. It was revealed that he was a guest at the Washington Hilton hotel where the event took place.
Allen is facing charges for assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon, with additional charges expected to be filed, according to acting attorney general Todd Blanche. Following the shooting, Trump addressed the media and shared images on his Truth Social platform showing the handcuffed suspect on the ground.
Expressing his views, Trump labeled the suspect as a “lone wolf whack job” and commended the swift action taken by the secret service. He emphasized that the suspect did not come close to breaching the ballroom where he was seated during the incident, adding that the response showcased unity and bravery.
Washington mayor Muriel Bowser stated that there was no indication of anyone else being involved in the incident. Blanche praised law enforcement for their actions, referring to the event as a display of both the worst and best of the country.
Trump announced that the event would be rescheduled within the next 30 days. The Washington Hilton has a history related to presidential security incidents, notably the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan in 1981 by John Hinckley Jr outside the hotel, leading to enhanced security measures at the property.
