In the midst of a legal challenge, Donald Trump has justified the imposition of new tariffs on imports from the UK and numerous other countries. The US President replaced a previous set of tariffs that were deemed illegal by the US Supreme Court, with duties imposed on 60 nations. The White House defended these new levies as standard tariffs aligned with established guidelines, citing a failure by targeted economies to enforce bans on goods produced by slave labor.
The latest tariffs coincided with the expiration of a temporary 10% import levy that had already impacted Britain. Following the Supreme Court’s ruling against his initial global tariffs, which he previously hailed as “Liberation Day,” Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s decision but noted the necessity of various forms of tariffs.
Subsequently, a legal campaign group representing two small US businesses challenged the new import taxes in court. The Liberty Justice Centre, known for successfully contesting previous tariffs by Trump, aims to overturn the replacement levies. The group’s chairman, Sara Albrecht, emphasized that changing the statute does not alter the law, highlighting the limits on tariff authority that every administration must adhere to.
The UK Government clarified that the recent tariff adjustments would not affect the 10% rate facing UK businesses, which continue to export more to the US than any other single country. The Economic Prosperity Deal between the UK and the US, established last year, seeks to lessen the impact of US tariffs on UK industries and strengthen bilateral commercial relations.
Meanwhile, the US has lifted import duties on Scotch whisky, as announced by President Trump following a state visit by the King and Queen in April.
