“Two-child benefit limit lifted, aiding 1.5M children”

Date:

Up to 1.5 million children will benefit from the elimination of the Tory two-child benefit limit starting today. Advocates have praised this move as a significant milestone, attributing the cruel regulations to causing 100 children to fall into poverty daily. Despite opposition from Conservatives and Reform, the decision to remove the limit is expected to lift approximately half a million children out of poverty.

Both right-wing parties have expressed intentions to reinstate the policy, which restricts benefits like Universal Credit to a family’s first two children, if they regain power. Mark Russell, the chief executive of The Children’s Society, emphasized the positive impact of ending the two-child limit, stating that it will bring about substantial changes for families nationwide.

Headteacher Angi Gibson of Hadrian Park Primary School in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, emphasized the immediate positive effects the change will have on families. She highlighted the importance of this policy shift in improving the life prospects of children, describing it as a crucial opportunity for bettering their futures.

Helen Barnard, the director of policy and research at the foodbank charity Trussell, noted that lifting the two-child limit marks a crucial moment for families and the food banks that support them. She anticipates a decrease in the number of parents requiring emergency food assistance once the policy change takes effect, easing the strain on services and providing families with the security they deserve.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced the full elimination of the two-child limit in her Budget speech in November, with research indicating that two-thirds of affected children reside in households where at least one individual is employed. Labour views this action as a significant step towards reducing child poverty, with chairwoman Anna Turley highlighting the positive impact on nearly half a million children and their families.

Employment minister Dame Diana Johnson remarked on the removal of the two-child limit, emphasizing the newfound security and opportunities it will provide for hundreds of thousands of children. The goal is to break the connection between a child’s background and their future prospects, with this change representing a step forward in achieving that objective.
