UK Braces for Snowstorm as Temperatures Plummet

Date:

A dramatic weather map reveals that significant parts of the UK are set to be hit by blizzards in the coming days. Despite temperatures reaching above 17C earlier this week, a drop in mercury is expected due to a low-pressure system sweeping across the nation. The map indicates that areas extending as far south as the Midlands could witness snowfall around Monday, March 16.

The most severe snowfall is anticipated in Perth and Kinross, Stirling, and East Ayrshire in Scotland, as well as Cumbria and County Durham in England. Regions across the Midlands, parts of Wales, and other areas are also likely to experience flurries, as depicted by the map.

In stark contrast to the recent weather, where temperatures soared to 17.8C in Porthmadog, northwest Wales, and 17.6C in Wiggonholt, West Sussex, the upcoming conditions are forecasted to be much colder. The map for March 16 illustrates a white hue stretching along the coastline from rural Cumbria in the Northwest of England to Caithness in the northern tip of Scotland, covering a distance of approximately 500 miles.

The upcoming cold spell is expected to disrupt travel, create hazardous road and pavement conditions, and potentially lead to power outages. The Met Office is monitoring the situation closely, mentioning in their long-range forecast the likelihood of widespread unsettled conditions by mid-March.

Temperatures are anticipated to plummet during this period, with early predictions indicating lows of -8C in the Scottish Highlands and -5C in Dumfries and Galloway. Strong westerly winds are also expected, particularly along the northwest coasts of England and Scotland.

The BBC forecast for March 9 to 15 suggests an increase in activity of Atlantic systems next week, bringing rain and strong winds, primarily affecting northern and western regions. Southern and eastern parts may see below-average precipitation due to European high pressure influence, while the north and west, especially Northern Ireland and western Scotland, are likely to experience wetter conditions.

Overall, mild temperatures are expected due to south-easterly to south-westerly flows, with occasional chilly nights between frontal systems.
