“UK Concerned About High Roaming Charges at World Cup”

Date:

More than half of the UK population is concerned about incurring high mobile phone charges due to data usage, especially for those heading to the World Cup this year. The United States has been identified as the priciest location for using roaming data in a detailed study of our data consumption patterns while overseas.

Sky Mobile’s Data Roaming Index has shed light on the activities that drain our devices and the countries where data usage can result in significant costs. Research indicates that failing to disable app notifications can lead to bills of up to £20, while streaming a single film trailer can cost Brits up to £120.

According to Sky Mobile’s index, common data-draining practices abroad include online messaging, unintentionally downloading WhatsApp messages, using maps and navigation tools, and search engines. Additionally, booking reservations, tours, and activities prompt many Brits to activate their data despite the expense. Social media posting is another reason why individuals choose to incur charges by enabling data services.

The study also uncovered that a large percentage of travelers lack knowledge of data-saving techniques. To assist UK citizens abroad, Sky Mobile has compiled a useful guide filled with ‘roaming hacks’ to help reduce data consumption while traveling.

Failure to implement these strategies could result in hefty bills in the US, highlighting the importance of being mindful of data usage while abroad. Following the US, Thailand and Barbados are also among the top countries with high roaming charges.

The research underscores a notable gap in awareness among Brits regarding roaming charges. Younger individuals aged 25-34 are nearly twice as likely to face unexpected costly roaming fees compared to those aged 55-64. Notably, Northern Ireland exhibits the lowest awareness of roaming charges, with over half of the population rarely checking or being unaware of such costs.

With the potential for even minor phone use abroad to trigger substantial charges, it is crucial to have a suitable plan in place to avoid excessive expenses. Sky Mobile’s Roaming Passport Plus now covers 120 destinations, allowing customers to utilize their UK data, calls, and text allowances for £2 a day, without any setup requirements or surprise bills.

Ben Case, Managing Director of Connectivity at Sky, emphasized the simplicity and affordability of using Sky Mobile’s services abroad. By offering access to data, calls, and texts in 120 destinations for just £2 a day, Sky aims to make staying connected while traveling hassle-free. Roaming Passport Plus activates automatically, enabling users to access their UK allowances seamlessly.
