The lack of water has led to challenges for farmers in cultivating essential crops like oats and wheat, resulting in decreased milk production from dairy cows in Kent.
The visuals highlight the escalating crisis that has depleted reservoirs, hindering farmers from achieving their usual high crop yields. Ashford is just one of many regions in southern, central, and eastern England facing prolonged dry spells, with some areas on the brink of full drought. Affected regions include Devon, Cornwall, Isles of Scilly, East Anglia, Hertfordshire, North London, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Wessex, the West Midlands, Thames, London, parts of Kent, South London, Solent, and South Downs.
These regions may soon join others like East Anglia, Hertfordshire, London, Thames Valley, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Devon, Cornwall, West Midlands, and Wessex in experiencing severe drought conditions.
Helen Wakeham, the Environment Agency’s water director and National Drought Group chair, expressed concern about the rapid depletion of water resources due to the scorching weather. Wakeham emphasized the need for conservation efforts to preserve water for nature and agriculture during this critical period.
