Vaping and smoking might soon be prohibited in specific outdoor areas like near hospitals, schools, and children’s playgrounds.
The Department of Health and Social Care is planning to conduct a public consultation on expanding smoking restrictions to these locations. Additionally, indoor spaces, already smoke-free, would also become free of vaping and heated tobacco.
According to Health Secretary Wes Streeting, the aim is to protect children and patients from the dangers of second-hand smoke, which can lead to heart disease and lung cancer.
The government is focusing on prevention to reduce the burden on the NHS and promote a healthier society where everyone can enjoy a longer, healthier life.
The consultation will highlight the risks of second-hand smoke even in outdoor settings, especially for children and vulnerable individuals. By implementing these measures in places frequented by young people and patients, the government hopes to prevent illnesses and diseases.
Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, emphasized the harmful effects of second-hand smoke on non-smokers, particularly on health conditions like asthma, cancers, stroke, and heart disease.
The consultation will also address concerns such as defining outdoor boundaries, exemptions, designated smoking zones, and communication strategies to ensure the regulations are practical and fair. There will be a minimum six-month period between the regulations being finalized and their enforcement.
While smoking bans outside hospitality venues have been rejected to avoid impacting businesses negatively, the focus remains on safeguarding children and families from second-hand smoke and vaping.
Dr. Charmaine Griffiths, from the British Heart Foundation, expressed strong support for the government’s efforts to protect individuals from harm due to second-hand smoke exposure.
Similarly, Cancer Research UK’s Dr. Ian Walker commended the UK Government’s actions towards creating a smoke-free environment and safeguarding the most vulnerable members of society.
