Vaping products may soon be subject to plain packaging regulations and sold discreetly in a government crackdown unveiled today. Health Secretary James Murray revealed plans to treat e-cigarettes similarly to traditional cigarettes, aiming to remove them from prominent display in shops nationwide.
The proposal includes implementing plain packaging for cigarette papers and cigars, as well as eliminating all tobacco product displays in duty-free zones and airports. Mr. Murray emphasized the need to address youth vaping by restricting flashy packaging and simplifying product presentation.
According to Mr. Murray, the government aims to regulate vaping products to protect young people from nicotine addiction, similar to measures taken for tobacco products. The recent Tobacco and Vapes Act grants authorities the power to phase out smoking among younger generations, with a focus on curbing youth vaping.
Around one million 11–17-year-olds in Great Britain reportedly experimented with vaping in 2025, with colorful packaging and enticing flavors being key factors influencing youth consumption.
The consultation launched by the UK government and devolved administrations proposes standardized packaging for vaping products, limiting branding elements and emphasizing simple product descriptions. The goal is to deter underage vaping by reducing marketing strategies that appeal to children.
While acknowledging the potential benefits of vapes for adult smokers seeking to quit, Mr. Murray stressed the importance of preventing their use by minors. He emphasized the need for children to make healthy choices free from misleading marketing tactics.
Professor Steve Turner of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health expressed concerns over the marketing tactics employed by tobacco and vaping companies to target young consumers. He called for stringent regulations to safeguard children from the risks of nicotine addiction.
