“UK Heatwave Trends: Cooler Weekend Ahead, Fifth Heatwave Looms”

Date:

After reaching a peak of 35C earlier this week, the Met Office is predicting a decrease in temperatures leading up to the weekend. This recent heatwave marks the fourth occurrence in 2026, with indications from weather modeling data hinting at a potential fifth heatwave on the horizon.

According to the GFS weather model, temperatures are expected to rise again next Sunday, with highs of 31C possible in Gloucestershire and 29-30C likely in various western and southern regions. Subsequent data suggests that on August 10, the south-east of England, particularly in and around London, could experience highs of 34C, while areas in the Midlands might see temperatures reaching 30-31C.

Looking ahead to August 11, the GFS model projects that East Anglia and Essex could encounter scorching conditions with highs of 32C. Temperature anomaly maps reveal that England and Wales are anticipated to experience temperatures significantly exceeding the seasonal average, with 15 counties, all located in England, likely to witness temperatures of 32C or higher.

The Met Office anticipates that temperatures will return to more typical levels across most of the UK starting tomorrow. The forecast for the upcoming week suggests a cool start on Saturday with dry weather and occasional sunny spells, although isolated showers are a possibility. While warmer interludes are expected, particularly in the south, the forecast also mentions the likelihood of widespread heavy rain and strong winds at times.

Fortunately, the upcoming heat is not expected to be as intense as seen in recent weeks.
