“UK Heatwave Triggers Flight Chaos at Heathrow & Gatwick”

Date:

Hundreds of flights have been canceled at both Heathrow and Gatwick airports due to intense heatwave conditions triggering significant thunderstorms in southern regions of the UK. Flight tracking data reveals that over 300 flights have experienced delays at these major travel hubs today.

According to aviation agency Eurocontrol, only Heathrow and Gatwick are currently facing “heavy” delays caused by the thunderstorms. Departure boards indicate delays of up to six hours affecting airlines such as EasyJet and British Airways.

The UK’s air traffic control service expects delays to persist throughout the day. Gatwick Airport has implemented temporary air traffic control restrictions due to ongoing thunderstorms, resulting in flight disruptions.

Gatwick Airport stated that temporary air traffic restrictions were imposed following last night’s thunderstorms, leading to delays and cancellations today. EasyJet is working to assist affected passengers by proactively canceling some flights and offering rebooking options, refunds, as well as accommodation and meals where necessary.

Lightning strikes during the night caused fires at multiple properties in southern England. Although the heatwave is subsiding, the Met Office warns of possible further thunderstorms this weekend, with hail also predicted in some areas.

The Met Office forecasts continued thunderstorm activity on Saturday, especially in the southeast, with potential for intense lightning and hail. Next week’s weather in the UK is expected to feature a mix of cloudy and sunny periods, along with occasional rain from the west.
