UK Braces for Record-Breaking Heatwave

Date:

A new heatwave is expected to push temperatures in the UK to soar up to 38C in the coming days, according to weather forecast maps. Yesterday marked the hottest day of the year and the hottest June day on record, with temperatures reaching 37.3C in Santon Downham due to an ongoing heatwave. The Met Office issued rare red weather warnings for extreme heat in England, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning causing damage in various regions.

Although the Met Office predicts a slight drop in temperatures below 30C tomorrow, there are indications that the 30C threshold could be surpassed again soon. The GFS weather model suggests a four-day heatwave starting on July 8, with temperatures ranging from 30C to 33C across central and southern England, peaking at 36C near London on July 9. By July 10, temperatures could hit 38C in western England and the south, with most areas in England and Wales exceeding 30C.

On July 11, temperatures may once again reach 38C in regions like the north-west, Midlands, Yorkshire, and the south-east, extending as far as the England-Scotland border. The temperature anomaly maps depict the UK, particularly England, shaded in deep red, indicating temperatures well above the seasonal average. The GFS weather model forecasts that 17 counties in England could experience temperatures of 38C or higher.

The Met Office anticipates “hot” conditions in July with potential thundery showers, stating that high-pressure patterns might prevail, leading to settled and drier than average conditions. However, there is a possibility of changeable or unsettled weather later in the period, with above-normal temperatures and a chance of hot conditions at times.
