“RSPCA Urges Proper Storage of Goal Netting to Protect Wildlife”

Date:

The RSPCA is advising individuals who have gardens to perform a final check before retiring for the night, emphasizing that this simple action could potentially save lives.

With the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 stirring football enthusiasts to engage in outdoor activities, the animal welfare organization is reinforcing its message to securely store goal netting after use. Recent incidents have highlighted the dangers wildlife faces when getting caught in unattended football nets, emphasizing the swift panic that ensues when animals become trapped.

This reminder coincides with the ongoing Summer of Kindness initiative by the charity. RSPCA Animal Rescue Officers Joanna Thorpe and Emma Baker responded to a situation in Grundisburgh, Suffolk, where a deer was found entangled in football netting, requiring assistance to free itself from the entrapment.

After a delicate operation to release the deer and evaluate its condition, the officers successfully returned the animal to its natural habitat. ARO Joanna expressed gratitude that the deer was discovered in time, highlighting the distress and potential harm wild animals face when trapped.

Similar incidents have occurred since the start of the World Cup, including the rescue of a young fox in north London. ARO Nicola Thomas intervened when the fox was found tangled in football goal netting, requiring immediate attention to ensure its safety and well-being.

Following treatment at the Essex Wildlife Hospital, the fox recovered and was released back into the wild. ARO Nicola emphasized the importance of promptly addressing hazards like loose netting to prevent such incidents, urging everyone using football equipment to store them properly after use.
