A mother and daughter, both originally from the UK and later residents of Ireland, were laid to rest together in a joint funeral following a tragic accident. Nell Saffron Raven, a renowned writer, and her daughter Irena, affectionately known as Ira, lost their lives in a fatal car collision on July 24. The 53-year-old Nell, a former journalist, resided with her family, including 10-year-old Ira, in Gortnacleigh, Milltown, Belturbet, Co Cavan.
Ms. Raven, who recently obtained Irish citizenship, was remembered during an emotional ceremony for her writing skills, motherly devotion, and her battle with cancer. Ira was described as a delightful and artistic child who cherished music, Irish dancing, and their life in Co Cavan.
The tragic incident occurred on the R162 at Corclare, Sherlock. Nell passed away shortly after the crash, while Ira succumbed to her injuries on July 28 at Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street Hospital.
A touching funeral service at St Patrick’s Church, Milltown, saw a single wicker coffin bearing Nell and Ira brought in as ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen played, a song close to Nell and her husband Alex. Mourners commemorated the lives of the mother and daughter, with Nell’s husband, Alexandru, and other family members present.
During the service, it was revealed that Ira had posthumously donated organs to save the lives of four children. Alexandru, in a heartfelt tribute, shared memories of their family life, from their early days in Oxford to their eventual move to Ireland in 2019.
As Alexandru struggled to express his grief, he highlighted Nell’s writing prowess, motherly love, and Ira’s vibrant personality. He pondered the meaning of their tragic fate, finding solace in the entirety of their shared story.
The funeral included personal items symbolizing Nell and Ira’s lives, such as a book by George Orwell, Ira’s favorite teddy bear ‘Ratty’, dried flowers from a Valentine’s Day gift, and Ira’s dancing shoes from a TV appearance.
Friends and family paid tribute to Ira’s joyful spirit, with Liam Connolly recalling cherished moments and playful antics they shared. The funeral concluded with Ira’s favorite song ‘Hey Brother’ by Avicii playing as their coffin was carried out, followed by interment at Drumlane cemetery.
