Elliott commented that compared to two decades ago, wildfires are expected to occur more frequently, potentially becoming an annual occurrence. He stated that changing weather patterns could lead to more floods in winter and prolonged droughts in summer.
Elliott also expressed concerns about the rising threat to human life due to wildfires. He noted a potential increase in both the frequency of wildfires and the risk to human safety. Drawing parallels with incidents in France and Spain, he urged the British public to be vigilant as tackling such wildfires poses significant challenges.
Meanwhile, firefighters are actively combating the Suffolk wildfire near Sizewell B nuclear power station for the fourth consecutive day. The blaze, covering approximately 370 acres, prompted the evacuation of around 200 families residing near Dunwich Heath to a temporary shelter in Westleton Village Hall.
Efforts are underway to restore the affected areas, with the National Trust seeking public donations for Dunwich Heath’s recovery. Additional wildfires have been reported across Europe, with firefighting operations ongoing amidst soaring temperatures. In France, a massive evacuation was conducted, enabling thousands to return home, while other regions experienced renewed displacement and evacuation efforts.
