The British military has been granted the authority to intercept Russian shadow fleet vessels passing through UK waters to prevent the Kremlin from taking advantage of the Iran crisis to support its military efforts.
Keir Starmer, the leader of the opposition, has authorized British forces to seize oil tankers attempting to evade sanctions and provide financial support to Vladimir Putin.
In a joint operation with the US, British forces participated in a significant operation on the Marinera tanker off the coast of Iceland earlier this year. The tanker, previously known as the Bella-1, was allegedly involved in violating oil sanctions related to Venezuela.
Recently, the UK supported the French navy in seizing an oil tanker in the Mediterranean. However, British commandos were not previously authorized to board such vessels.
Addressing the decision, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to safeguard the country’s interests in an increasingly volatile global environment. He stated that the primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of the nation and protect British interests worldwide.
The Prime Minister expressed concerns that escalating oil prices due to the Middle East conflict could benefit Putin financially. Therefore, efforts to target his shadow fleet have been intensified to safeguard Britain and disrupt Putin’s financial backing for the conflict in Ukraine.
Mr. Starmer is scheduled to attend a summit in Helsinki with Nordic and Baltic allies to discuss strategies for countering Russia’s aggressive actions.
The UK is increasing pressure on Moscow’s alleged shadow fleet, suspected to comprise over 1,000 outdated tankers engaged in illegal oil transportation to fund Putin’s military activities.
Approximately 75% of Russia’s crude oil is transported by these aging vessels, with around 544 ships already facing sanctions from the UK and other allies.
These aging ships have also been accused of disrupting undersea cables critical for telecommunications and energy supply networks, posing a significant risk of financial and communication system disruptions, as highlighted by the National Security Strategy Committee.
By restricting access to UK waters, including the Channel, vessels will be compelled to take longer, more expensive routes or risk detention by British authorities.
Recent military exercises have involved scenarios where specialists board non-compliant, potentially armed vessels or those using advanced surveillance to avoid capture.
Upon detention of a vessel, legal actions may be pursued against the owners, operators, and crew members.
