UK Prepares for Late-April Snowfall Across 38 Cities

Date:

The UK is bracing for cold spells and wintry showers towards the end of April, as indicated by the latest forecasts from the Met Office. Weather maps now suggest that up to 38 cities across the country could experience snowfall.

According to the GFS weather model, snow is predicted to fall in various parts of the UK starting on April 28. The snowfall is expected to commence in northern Scotland before moving southwards, possibly reaching London.

The weather maps highlight heavy snowfall in the northeast of Scotland around midday on April 28, with lighter snow in southern Scotland, the Pennines, and parts of Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, regions like North Wales and the east coast of England are likely to experience rain during the same period.

By April 29, snow is forecasted across northern England, Yorkshire, and Lincolnshire, with additional snowflakes expected in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and some rain in the far southeast of England.

A subsequent batch of snow is forecasted to approach from the west. By the early hours of April 30, cities in western England such as Manchester and Birmingham are expected to witness heavy snow, extending as far south as Bristol.

Although the snowfall is projected to weaken as it traverses the country, London could still see some snow around 9 am on April 30, albeit less intense compared to earlier snowfall in the west.

Throughout this period, intermittent snow showers are anticipated in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and various parts of England, affecting a total of 38 cities.

The Met Office warns of wintry showers impacting parts of the UK later in April, with a brief cold spell expected. The forecast for April 22 to May 1 suggests that dry weather is likely to prevail, with occasional exceptions such as rain and breezy conditions in the southwest due to Atlantic frontal zones. Towards the end of April, colder air may sweep across the UK, leading to wintry showers in the north and east, along with widespread overnight frost. However, any cold snap is anticipated to be short-lived before giving way to relatively milder conditions.
