Rachel Reeves has outlined strategies to prevent unjust price hikes in response to public concerns regarding escalating oil and fuel costs triggered by the conflict in Iran.
During an emergency Cobra meeting on Monday, the Chancellor briefed MPs on her proposals after discussing them with the Prime Minister and colleagues. These measures include an “anti-profiteering framework” to identify and clamp down on businesses taking advantage of the crisis in the Middle East, as well as assisting the Competition and Markets Authority in detecting price gouging.
Prime Minister also mentioned plans to enhance the competition regulator’s authority to combat profiteering.
Disability charity Sense emphasized the importance of disabled individuals being at the forefront of the government’s targeted energy assistance plans. The charity highlighted the risk of escalating home operation expenses for disabled people, particularly in maintaining essential medical equipment and ensuring a safe home environment.
The Chancellor pledged to provide an update on fuel pricing within the next month as the Competition and Markets Authority intensifies its monitoring of rising prices. Additionally, the UK has commenced releasing oil reserves to address short-term shortages, aligning with the International Energy Agency’s approval for the largest crude oil release in history.
Furthermore, the Chancellor emphasized that support for surging energy bills will be directed towards those most in need, criticizing previous broad-based assistance schemes that increased national debt without effectively targeting vulnerable households.
The Confederation of British Industry supported Rachel Reeves’ consideration of targeted household energy bill support but urged more immediate actions to reduce costs for businesses amidst soaring energy expenses.
In a separate development, a campaign group raised concerns over the significant financial losses from wasted wind energy, advocating for localized pricing mechanisms to improve efficiency across the grid.
