“UK Unveils Plans for 7 New Towns with Thousands of Homes”

Date:

Ministers have announced the proposed locations for seven new towns that will offer a combined total of tens of thousands of new homes.

Among these locations is Manchester Victoria North, where up to 15,000 homes are set to be built, accompanied by a new Metrolink stop for residents. Other sites include Tempsford in Bedfordshire, with plans for up to 40,000 homes centered around a new East West rail station, and Thamesmead in Greenwich, where 15,000 new homes are planned.

The final locations for these new towns, part of a significant housebuilding initiative described as the most ambitious in 50 years, are expected to be confirmed by the end of 2026. The Labour party’s manifesto had pledged to create a new generation of towns inspired by the legacy of the 1945 Labour government.

There have been reports that one of the new towns might be named Attleeton in honor of post-war Prime Minister Clement Attlee, while Elizabethtown, named after the late Queen, is also being considered. However, no decisions have been made regarding the names of the new towns.

Keir Starmer has committed to breaking ground on the new towns by 2029 to address the housing crisis, aiming to ensure that at least 40% of the homes are affordable, including social housing.

Housing Secretary Steve Reed emphasized the need for change, stating that people desire affordable homes, functional local infrastructure, and thriving communities with good job opportunities. He highlighted the new approach to planning whole communities with integrated homes, jobs, transport links, and green spaces to provide families with security and opportunities.

Mayor Andy Burnham of Greater Manchester welcomed the proposed new town in Victoria North, highlighting its significance as a major regeneration project within the fast-growing city-region.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves emphasized the importance of planning reform to facilitate the construction of new homes and create opportunities for young people in the housing market. She expressed the government’s commitment to building a new generation of new towns to enhance dynamic cities and foster new communities.

The proposed new towns in various locations include Tempsford, Bedfordshire (up to 40,000 homes), Crews Hill and Chase Park in Enfield (up to 21,000 homes), Leeds South Bank in West Yorkshire (up to 20,000 homes), Thamesmead in Greenwich (up to 15,000 homes), Brabazon and the West Innovation Arc in South Gloucestershire (up to 40,000 homes), and Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire (up to 40,000 homes).
