Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan are set to remain in custody for a minimum of two more weeks until their upcoming hearing as they resist being sent back to the United Kingdom, where they face allegations of rape and sex trafficking, a federal judge revealed.
US magistrate Lauren Louis scheduled a detention hearing for August 13 to determine whether the social media influencers should continue to be detained or granted release during what could potentially be a lengthy extradition process.
The Tates did not appear in court on Monday, nor were they obligated to, and have been held in custody since a brief court appearance shortly following their arrest on July 18.
Legal representatives for the siblings expressed their desire for the US government to provide them with the documents that UK authorities used to secure their apprehension. “They have nothing concrete beyond mere accusations,” stated attorney Joseph McBride following the hearing. “At present, it’s essentially a matter of their word against ours.”
During the court session, US attorney Alejandra Lopez mentioned that the UK has until mid-September to furnish all relevant materials to the State Department. The brothers have consistently argued that their controversial remarks, often viewed as violent and misogynistic, were either misinterpreted or meant as jests.
Jackie Perczek, another member of their legal team, emphasized that the Tates have demonstrated their lack of flight risk by regularly returning to Romania every month, even after facing accusations there of enticing women for exploitation.
“For the past three years, they have not absconded,” she remarked. “They have traveled extensively, yet consistently return to Romania on a monthly basis.”
The former professional kickboxers, who hold dual US and UK citizenship, boast millions of followers on social media and openly support Donald Trump. Despite this, the White House has clarified that the brothers should not anticipate any presidential assistance.
McBride, speaking shortly after the Tates’ arrest, asserted, “They have not committed any wrongdoing. They should not be extradited for crimes they did not commit.” He implied that the extradition efforts were politically driven, although he did not provide specifics.
Officials in Britain disclosed that the fresh charges involve four additional accusers and arose subsequent to the receipt of evidence from Bedfordshire police. The accusations, spanning from 2010 to 2017, encompass rape, assault, trafficking, and offenses related to child indecency and extreme pornography.
The brothers are already facing charges of rape, physical harm, human trafficking, and managing prostitution for profit in connection to three other accusers in the UK between 2012 and 2015.
Having relocated to Romania in 2016, the siblings were detained there in 2022, accused of involvement in schemes to lure women for exploitation. They have consistently refuted these allegations, and the Romanian case has stalled due to legal and procedural issues.
