US Military Aircraft Issues Distress Signal over Persian Gulf

Date:

A US military aircraft experienced an emergency situation while flying over the Persian Gulf, prompting it to issue a distress signal before disappearing from radar. The aircraft, a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker known for refuelling other military planes in-flight, activated the 7700 distress code during its flight from the Al Dhafra Air Base in the UAE to Qatar. The plane, involved in ongoing US military operations in the Middle East, flew in a circular pattern before starting its descent for landing.

The specific cause of the emergency remains unknown, as the 7700 distress signal can indicate various potential issues requiring immediate attention. When a pilot inputs the emergency code 7700 into the transponder, it informs air traffic control of the distress situation and the need for priority handling. This code serves as a general alert for emergencies other than hijacking (7500) or radio failure (7600).

Following the detection of the emergency code on flight tracking systems, the aircraft’s transponder signal was lost en route to Qatar, where US military aircraft are commonly based. Subsequently, H125 light utility helicopters were observed in the vicinity. Iran’s Fars news agency referenced data from Flightradar24 in reporting the incident.

The KC-135 Stratotanker plays a crucial role in providing aerial refuelling support for US Air Force missions. It is equipped with four turbofan engines under swept wings, enabling takeoffs with heavy payloads. Depending on fuel configuration, the aircraft can transport up to 83,000 pounds of cargo. Notably, a similar aircraft was lost in western Iraq in March during Operation Epic Fury, with no hostile or friendly fire involvement reported.
