The U.S. government is urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly denounce the ongoing siege by Jewish settlers in a Palestinian village, according to U.S. and Israeli officials. Settlers have been blockading homes in Qusra in the occupied West Bank for nearly a week, confining Palestinians in an area where settlers are aggressively trying to expand their control over land, encroaching on territory crucial for Palestinian statehood aspirations.
The siege has garnered public criticism from the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, who strongly supports Jewish settlements in the West Bank. He referred to the settlers besieging a Palestinian home as “Israeli terrorists.” White House officials are reportedly pressuring Netanyahu to condemn the siege publicly, especially after learning that a Palestinian-American’s home was among those targeted.
A White House official emphasized the importance of a stable West Bank in ensuring Israel’s security and aligning with the administration’s peace goals for the region. Netanyahu has not issued any statements regarding the Qusra siege, and neither his office nor the White House has responded to requests for comments.
The escalation of settler violence in the West Bank over the past three years, following the 2023 attacks by Hamas, has raised concerns. However, condemning the settlers could pose political risks for Netanyahu, particularly ahead of an upcoming election, where he may risk alienating settler voters crucial to his right-wing coalition.
Residents trapped in besieged homes in Qusra have reported receiving aid from foreign and Israeli activists, although the military imposed restrictions on direct aid delivery, citing a closed military zone. The United Nations has noted that around 15 Palestinians, including children, are trapped without basic services like water and electricity.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) intervened to remove a tent erected by settlers in Qusra, emphasizing their commitment to protecting local residents. Netanyahu’s government has actively promoted the expansion of settlements in the West Bank, a move criticized by rights groups for fueling land seizures and undermining prospects for peace.
The siege in Qusra began when settlers blocked access to homes, set up tents, and cut off essential services, leading to a standoff with residents. The IDF has deployed soldiers to maintain security and assist residents, as tensions continue to escalate in the region.
The West Bank is home to a significant Palestinian population alongside a substantial settler presence. The area hosts numerous settlements and outposts, highlighting the complex dynamics and challenges facing the region.
