Six individuals have been apprehended by Donald Trump for allegedly causing damage to the $14 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The incident has cast a shadow over America’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations. The President attributes the vandalism to the problems encountered during the multimillion-dollar restoration of the pool.
In a social media announcement, Trump mentioned a significant gash in the fresh paintwork spanning 350 feet. He vowed that the federal government would release images illustrating the purported damage as authorities rush to complete repairs before the upcoming festivities. The refurbishment involved draining the century-old Reflecting Pool and painting its base in a hue dubbed “American flag blue.”
Despite the overhaul, issues such as algae blooms and large sections of the new coating peeling off have plagued the project. Trump has consistently pointed fingers at vandals for the peeling paint and substandard work at the Reflecting Pool without presenting any concrete evidence to support his claims.
The President asserted that the damage was intentional and criminal, emphasizing the elaborate nature of the act. He also mentioned seven additional individuals who were cited for allegedly causing harm to the pool. The damage, described as slashes over a 350-foot length made by a sharp knife or razor, has been a cause of concern.
One man was confirmed to have been arrested for touching the peeling paint, claiming he wanted to examine the new coating. National Guard members and Park Police have increased patrols in the area following Trump’s accusations of vandalism. The Department of the Interior is set to share evidence of the alleged vandalism through photos and videos.
While Trump alleged the addition of fertilizer to the pool causing algae growth, workers have been observed pouring hydrogen peroxide to combat the issue. Experts suggest that hydrogen peroxide, besides eliminating algae, can act as a paint remover. The dark-colored lining of the pool could also be contributing to the algae problem by absorbing more sunlight and warming the water.
