A captivating new 90-minute film titled WHAM! 10 Days in China is set to hit theaters next month, showcasing never-before-seen footage of the band’s 10-day journey behind the iron curtain.
During a rare interview, former manager Simon Napier-Bell unveils the details of his strategy to propel George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley to international stardom. Managing WHAM! from 1983 to 1985, Simon recalls his initial encounter with the duo after witnessing their performance of “Young Guns” on Top of the Pops.
Despite initial skepticism, George’s ambitious goal of becoming the number one group within a year led Simon and his business partner Jazz Summers to propose a groundbreaking idea – making WHAM! the first Western pop group to perform in China. This concept gained George’s approval, setting in motion a series of events to make it a reality.
Facing numerous challenges in China, Simon persisted in his efforts to secure an invitation for WHAM! to perform in the country. Through persistent outreach and strategic networking, he eventually succeeded in gaining the interest of Chinese ministers, paving the way for WHAM!’s historic concerts in Beijing and Guangzhou.
Despite initial setbacks, WHAM!’s performances in China garnered significant global attention, propelling the band to newfound fame and recognition. The documentary, meticulously crafted over 18 months by Simon, promises to offer audiences a unique perspective on this pivotal moment in music history.
Simon’s innovative approach, including distributing WHAM! songs in Mandarin to concert attendees, played a crucial role in the band’s success and the subsequent influx of foreign investment into China. Reflecting on his experiences, Simon remains proud of the impact WHAM! had on bridging cultural divides through music.
As the film’s release coincides with the anniversary of George Michael’s passing, Simon fondly remembers the late singer’s remarkable talents and enduring legacy. WHAM! 10 Days in China is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on July 28, with ticket sales commencing on June 24. For further information, visit www.wham10daysinchina.com.
