“Norway to Build World’s First Ocean Ship Tunnel”

Date:

Norway is set to embark on an ambitious project to construct the world’s first ocean ship tunnel, with an estimated cost of £671 million. The tunnel, known as the Stad Ship Tunnel, will span a distance of just over a mile along the country’s west coast, linking Moldefjord to Kjødepollen on the Stadlandet Peninsula.

The decision to invest in this project stems from the need to provide a safe passage for vessels, particularly to circumvent the hazardous Stadhavet Sea. This area is notorious for its extreme weather conditions, with storms battering the coastline for approximately 100 days each year, posing a significant risk to maritime traffic.

The tunnel, measuring 1.7km in length and 2.2km including entrance structures, aims to offer a secure route for passenger ferries, fishing fleets, and cargo ships. It will be large enough to accommodate various types of vessels, from fishing boats to cruise liners, reducing delays and enhancing safety for maritime operations.

Initially approved by the Norwegian parliament in 2021, the project faced setbacks due to escalating costs. However, following a revised budget approval by the government, plans for the tunnel have been revived. The Norwegian Coastal Administration is currently evaluating contractor bids, with excavation work expected to begin in the near future.

Upon completion, the Stad Ship Tunnel will stand 50 meters high and 36 meters wide, allowing ships of up to 16,000 gross tonnes to pass through. It will facilitate smooth navigation at controlled speeds of five to eight knots, offering a free and efficient route for maritime traffic.

Authorities believe that this innovative tunnel will not only enhance maritime safety but also boost Norway’s shipping industry by providing a reliable and weather-resistant connection for transporting goods and passengers.
