“Mother’s Shock as Child Battles Measles Despite Vaccine”

Date:

A mother has shared her shock upon learning that her young child likely contracted an old-fashioned disease while at a nursery. Hannah Steppel’s son, Lenny-George, became severely ill, prompting his mother to call emergency services. He was swiftly transported to the hospital by ambulance and fought for his life against measles, despite having received his first MMR vaccine but being too young for the second dose.

Hannah, aged 31 and employed at a heating company, expressed her newfound awareness of the dangers of measles, previously considering it a disease of the past. She emphasized the severity of the illness, stating that she had never encountered anyone with measles before her son’s illness.

Recent reports from official government statistics and leaked internal documents highlighted a concerning rise in measles cases across England. As of February 16, there have been 158 confirmed cases this year, with two-thirds reported in London and the remainder in the West Midlands. In 2025, there were 959 confirmed cases of measles in England.

An internal memo, classified as “official sensitive,” indicated 340 suspected cases in London this year. Furthermore, between January 20 and February 7, 34 confirmed cases were identified in a single school in Enfield, prompting local health authorities to urge parents to ensure their children receive the MMR vaccine. Children who contract the virus are required to isolate for three weeks and are prohibited from returning to school during that period.

Following her son’s ordeal, the mother from Sutton, London, is cautioning fellow parents about the importance of vaccination. She stressed the collective responsibility in safeguarding not only one’s own children but also other children. Recounting her son’s situation, she highlighted the critical role of the MMR vaccine in potentially saving lives.
