The chief of the World Health Organization made his way to Bunia in eastern Congo over the weekend. Bunia is in the midst of an unusual Ebola outbreak where the virus is spreading rapidly despite efforts to contain it, despite improvements in healthcare facilities and recent aid deliveries.
WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is scheduled to tour a treatment center and meet with local officials, healthcare workers, and affected families in Bunia.
In a statement to the press on Friday, Tedros emphasized the importance of providing comprehensive support to combat the disease at its core and ensuring all necessary assistance is available.
The WHO reported that there have been 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths as of Friday. Meanwhile, Uganda has confirmed nine cases and one death according to the country’s health ministry.
The current Ebola strain, Bundibugyo virus, has no approved treatment or vaccine.
Despite the challenging situation, Tedros expressed confidence in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s ability to bring the outbreak under control, citing the country’s past experiences with Ebola outbreaks.
International aid from the European Union and the US is being mobilized to support the response efforts in Congo. Additional medical supplies and personnel have been deployed to hospitals in Bunia to better manage the influx of patients.
However, Doctors Without Borders cautioned that the response efforts are lagging behind the rapid spread of the outbreak, emphasizing the need for expanded testing, quicker deployment of aid workers, and consistent access to medical resources.
Local tensions have escalated due to strict medical protocols regarding the handling of Ebola victims’ bodies, sparking attacks on health facilities. Furthermore, rebel groups in the region have impeded relief operations.
Neighboring countries have implemented border closures and travel restrictions in response to the outbreak, although Tedros criticized these measures as ineffective and called for greater transparency in managing the crisis.
The situation remains dynamic, with ongoing efforts to contain the outbreak and address the challenges posed by the complex environment in eastern Congo.
