A woman who had always felt out of place in her family has made a shocking discovery 30 years later. Sasha Szafranski’s mother had repeatedly denied that she was adopted. However, using the genealogy tracker Ancestry.com, Sasha unearthed the truth about her family lineage.
Living in Coffs Harbour, Australia, Sasha was researching her father’s Polish heritage when she stumbled upon unexpected information. She learned that neither her mother nor her father were biologically related to her. This revelation came after it was revealed that the wrong embryo had been implanted into her mother during her last IVF procedure.
Initially assuming it was a mistake on the website, Sasha later found out that she had a previously unknown sister and an aunt who lived in her town. Sasha reached out to her aunt online to inquire about her and her twin sister’s conception via IVF.
The mix-up was traced back to the birth of Sasha and her sister in 1995, after their mother’s IVF treatment at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. The incorrect embryo had been implanted, leading to the twins being born to the wrong couple.
Despite the shocking revelation, Sasha still considers Penelope, her mother, as her own. She stated that this discovery has not altered their relationship. Interestingly, Sasha’s biological parents went on to have another daughter, who is biologically related to Sasha and her twin.
Legal action is being considered by both families to investigate the circumstances of the mix-up. The hospital’s fertility clinic, previously managed by North Shore A.R.T before being acquired by Virtus Health, has been implicated. Virtus Health, however, has denied any responsibility for the incident in 1995.
