“Zelensky Slams Olympic Officials over Banning Ukrainian’s Tribute Helmet”

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticized Olympic officials for prohibiting a fellow Ukrainian athlete from honoring fallen sports heroes from Kyiv. Skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych, aged 27, expressed that the International Olympics Committee is seeking to bar his helmet, which features images of Ukrainian athletes who lost their lives in the conflict.

Heraskevych wore the helmet during a training session in Cortina with the aim of using the Winter Games in Italy to sustain global pressure on Russia. The helmet showcases portraits of Ukrainian athletes who perished following Russia’s invasion in 2022, sourced from training and competitive events. Zelensky commended Heraskevych for raising awareness of the sacrifices made in their struggle.

The Ukrainian President emphasized that the truth represented by the helmet should not be considered inconvenient, inappropriate, or viewed as a political statement during a sporting event. Zelensky’s remarks came after Russian forces launched an attack on the Zaporizhzhia region, resulting in injuries to several civilians, including a one-year-old child.

The United States is currently attempting to mediate a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. Rule 50.2 of the Olympic Charter strictly prohibits any form of demonstration or political, religious, or racial propaganda within Olympic sites, venues, or related areas.

The National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has formally requested the International Olympic Committee to allow Heraskevych to use what they have labeled a “helmet of remembrance.” The committee states that the Ukrainian athlete’s helmet fully adheres to safety regulations and the rules of the International Olympics Committee.

According to the organization, the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has petitioned the International Olympic Committee for permission for skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych, the flag bearer of the national team, to participate in the 25th Winter Olympic Games Milano-Cortina 2026 while wearing a special “helmet of remembrance.”

In the ongoing conflict, Russia is pressing for control over Ukrainian territory in the east and strict limitations on the size and composition of Kyiv’s military in any potential agreement. With substantial losses on Russia’s side, including casualties and destroyed tanks, Ukrainian forces have also initiated counterattacks targeting Russian infrastructure and energy facilities.

These actions have significantly depleted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s resources. Ukraine has conducted long-range assaults on Russian missile installations, including a strike on Moscow’s Kapustin Yar test site in January, as confirmed by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Despite Ukrainian military advancements, Russian forces have retaliated by targeting civilian residences and energy supplies, severely impacting Ukraine’s ability to maintain heat amidst freezing temperatures. President Zelensky has accused the Kremlin of exploiting the harsh winter conditions to further escalate the ongoing conflict.
