“Adoptive Mother of Double-Amputee Tony Hudgell Battles Stage 4 Cancer”

Date:

The mother who adopted Tony Hudgell, a double-amputee, has successfully undergone a challenging surgery for her bowel cancer and remains determined to continue her fight against the disease. Paula Hudgell, a former nurse aged 58, spent 12 days hospitalized after undergoing extensive surgery and a hernia repair, describing it as the most grueling experience she has ever faced. Mrs. Hudgell, known for advocating for harsher penalties for child abuse after adopting Tony, who underwent amputation due to severe mistreatment by his biological parents, was honored with an OBE in 2022 for her efforts in promoting “Tony’s Law.”

Her battle with bowel cancer began in February 2022, following numerous misdiagnoses by GPs over four years, attributing her symptoms to IBS or menopause. By the time she received a correct diagnosis, the cancer had progressed significantly, necessitating surgery and chemotherapy. Despite being initially declared cancer-free, Mrs. Hudgell later discovered that the cancer had returned at stage 4, spreading to her lung and peritoneal lining.

In a recent Instagram update, Mrs. Hudgell shared her experience undergoing HIPEC and CRS surgery, a rigorous procedure involving tumor removal and localized heated chemotherapy. Despite facing immense physical and emotional challenges during her recovery, she expressed gratitude for the support of her family and her determination to persevere.

The post received an outpouring of support from around the world, with messages of encouragement from various individuals, including BBC Radio 2 host Zoe Ball and fashion designer Karen Millen. Mrs. Hudgell also revealed the impact of her terminal diagnosis on her family, particularly on Tony, who expressed concerns about his mother’s health to his teacher. She emphasized the importance of shielding Tony from the full extent of her illness, focusing on maintaining a sense of hope and resilience within the family.

Tony’s traumatic early life, marked by severe abuse resulting in the amputation of his legs, led to legal actions against his birth parents, with his birth father recently released on parole under strict conditions. Despite the challenges he has faced, Tony has shown remarkable resilience, becoming an inspiration through his fundraising efforts and receiving recognition for his bravery at a young age.
