Rachel Reeves has criticized Reform UK, likening them to a copycat version of the Conservative Party, while poking fun at Nigel Farage for his absence during the Spring Statement. The Chancellor, in an update to Members of Parliament, highlighted that both Reform UK and the Conservatives share a common goal of pushing nearly half a million children back into poverty. Reeves specifically pointed out the government’s decision to eliminate the two-child benefit cap, labeling it a “moral choice.”
She emphasized that both the Tories and Reform UK are in alignment regarding reinstating the detrimental policy, which would adversely affect a significant number of children. Reeves underscored that by welcoming ex-Tory members into Farage’s party, the replication of failed Tory policies was inevitable. She asserted that only the Labour Party possesses the appropriate economic strategy for families and the nation, regardless of the change in political party affiliation.
Reeves utilized the Spring Statement to assure voters of a projected increase in their annual income by £1,000 before the upcoming election. She also updated MPs on growth projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), maintaining that the government’s economic plan is on the right track. The OBR forecasted a 1.1% GDP growth in 2026, slightly lower than its previous prediction, but revised upwards for 2027 and 2028.
Reeves reiterated the importance of the government’s economic plan amidst recent global uncertainties, particularly due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East leading to a surge in oil and gas prices. She stressed the necessity of navigating through the current uncertainties and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to their economic roadmap, which has resulted in lower inflation, reduced borrowing, improved living standards, and a growing economy.
