In a tragic and perplexing turn of events, the family of a father-of-three experienced a heart-wrenching night as his mobile phone incessantly tried to reach them following his untimely demise in a train accident.
Charles E Peck was one of the casualties in the catastrophic San Fernando Valley Metrolink crash, known as the Chatsworth collision. He had recently gotten engaged to Andrea Katz and was a 49-year-old with three children from a previous marriage.
The fatal incident occurred on September 12, 2008, at 4:22 pm when a passenger train carrying 225 individuals collided at a speed of 83 mph with a cargo train operated by a three-member crew, as reported by Snopes.
Tragically, the crash resulted in 135 injuries, with 87 individuals hospitalized, including 46 in critical condition. Regrettably, 25 individuals lost their lives, according to the Mirror US.
Peck, a customer service representative for Delta Air Lines at Salt Lake City International Airport, perished instantly upon impact. However, his mobile phone continued to make calls, creating a disconcerting situation for his loved ones.
The 49-year-old had traveled to Los Angeles for a job interview at Van Nuys Airport, aiming to secure employment in California to marry his fiancée from Westlake Village.
Katz learned about the accident on the radio while on her way to pick Peck up from the station, accompanied by his parents and siblings.
Distressingly, Peck’s family received multiple calls from his phone throughout the night, totaling 35 calls, leaving them uncertain about his fate. The calls brought a glimmer of hope to the grieving family, suggesting that he might be alive but trapped.
Despite answering the calls, all they heard was static, and returning the calls led straight to voicemail.
After 12 hours, Peck’s body was recovered from the wreckage. The persistent calls prompted search teams to trace the phone’s location through its signal, leading to the discovery of Peck’s body an hour after the calls ceased.
It was later confirmed that Peck had died upon impact, yet his phone continued to function and played a crucial role in facilitating the discovery of his body, albeit the phone itself was never found.
An initial investigation into the Metrolink crash, the deadliest in its history, revealed that the engineer operating the commuter train had overlooked a red signal, causing a collision with the Union Pacific freight train on a single track.
This tragic incident underscores the importance of railway safety procedures and vigilance to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
