Archaeologists have made a fascinating discovery near the Great Pyramid of Giza, uncovering mysterious structures that date back to the era of ancient royal tombs. The discovery was made by an international team from Japan and Egypt using advanced non-invasive technology to map the Western Cemetery at Giza. The team identified two anomalies: an L-shaped feature located about two meters below the surface, and a larger, deeper zone directly beneath it.
The Western Cemetery is where the relatives of King Khufu, the pharaoh responsible for the Great Pyramid, as well as high-ranking officials, were laid to rest in tombs over 4,500 years ago. The findings, unearthed between 2021 and 2023, have been detailed in the journal Archaeological Prospection.
The shallow structure, measuring at least 10 meters in length, appears to have been filled with sand after its construction. Furthermore, the deeper anomaly, described as ‘highly resistive,’ could potentially signify compacted sand and gravel or an empty space, hinting at the presence of walls, shafts, or a chamber.
Lead researcher Motoyuki Sato from Tohoku University believes that the distinct geometric shape of the anomalies rules out natural formation. While the anomalies may point to vertical limestone walls or shafts associated with a tomb, further investigation is required for confirmation.
Harvard Egyptologist Peter Der Manuelian, not part of the initial team, highlighted the significance of the location, noting that the area had remained unexplored despite its historical importance. He emphasized that while L-shaped offering chapels are known at Giza, they are usually above ground, making this discovery particularly intriguing and deserving of further exploration.
Excavations are currently underway to verify the findings from the scans. If the structures lead to the discovery of a previously unknown burial site or chamber, it could significantly alter the understanding of how King Khufu’s family and elite were interred on the Giza Plateau.
