“Lord Mandelson Summoned by US Congress Over Epstein Links”

Date:

Lord Peter Mandelson has received a summons from the US Congress to testify regarding his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, according to recent reports. The Democratic members of the US House of Representatives reached out to the former UK Ambassador to the US, requesting his appearance before the Oversight Committee as part of their investigation into Epstein.

The request follows the discovery of photographs showing Lord Mandelson in intimate attire with a woman in the latest release of Epstein Files by the US Department of Justice. Allegations suggest that Mandelson might have disclosed sensitive market information to Epstein over 15 years ago, leading to a criminal investigation. Mandelson has refrained from commenting on these allegations.

Although Mandelson, a British national, cannot be compelled by US Congress to testify, the Oversight Committee has sought his cooperation. In a letter penned by House Democrats Suhas Subramanyam and Robert Garcia, they believe Mandelson possesses crucial information about Epstein’s associates.

The letter, as reported by the Telegraph, highlights Mandelson’s extensive social and business connections with Epstein. It urges Mandelson to participate in a transcribed interview with committee staff to shed light on Epstein’s criminal activities and his accomplices. Mandelson has been given a two-week deadline to respond to the summons.

In a previous statement after his dismissal as US Ambassador, Lord Mandelson expressed regret for associating with Epstein post-conviction and apologized to the victims of Epstein’s crimes. He clarified that he was unaware of Epstein’s actions and emphasized that he was not complicit in any criminal behavior.

Recent developments follow a UK Government decision to release all information related to Mandelson’s tenure in 2024, subject to vetting by Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee. Mandelson, aged 72, faces allegations of sharing confidential information with Epstein during his time as the business secretary under Prime Minister Gordon Brown during the 2008 financial crisis. The Cabinet Office has forwarded relevant materials to the Metropolitan Police following a review of the Epstein files by the US Department of Justice.
