Kemi Badenoch expressed gratitude towards Nigel Farage for assisting in what she referred to as her “spring cleaning” process, following the defection of former Tory member Robert Jenrick to Reform UK.
Badenoch’s acknowledgment came after she learned of Jenrick’s intention to switch parties and subsequently removed him from the Shadow Cabinet on Thursday amidst a day filled with political upheaval. Shortly thereafter, Nigel Farage welcomed Jenrick as the 24th ex-Tory MP to join Reform UK, despite previously criticizing him as insincere and lacking firm beliefs.
In various interviews today, Badenoch criticized Jenrick, accusing him of being untruthful and stating that his statements could not be trusted. When asked repeatedly if Jenrick was a “traitor,” Badenoch indicated that he was no longer her concern as he had become Farage’s responsibility.
She expressed satisfaction with Farage’s involvement in the situation, likening it to a form of spring cleaning for the Conservative Party, as individuals causing issues were departing to join Reform. Dismissing the significance of the defection, Badenoch stated that the public was uninterested in the internal conflicts within the Tory party.
Regarding the turmoil on the right side of politics, Labour minister Pat McFadden remarked on the ongoing chaos and drama within the Conservative ranks, suggesting that unity was lacking. He emphasized Labour’s focus on enhancing public services and criticized the distraction caused by internal party conflicts.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves dismissed Farage’s claim of a potential Labour defection to Reform, advising caution when considering his statements. She downplayed any concerns about defections, suggesting that Farage’s pronouncements should not be taken at face value.
