In the 1980s, a UFO resembling a ‘jellyfish’ with shifting colored lights was spotted hovering over a Russian city for an hour before vanishing. This incident is part of a collection of Soviet-era documents that reveal how officials secretly documented and evaluated peculiar sky objects while publicly dismissing alien craft claims.
The documents, comprising about 70 pages, have been recently translated into English and made accessible by journalist George Knapp. They shed light on how Soviet authorities cataloged what they termed ‘Abnormal Atmospheric Phenomena.’ One notable entry from February 13, 1989, recounts a large airborne object observed over Nalchik, Russia, resembling a ‘jellyfish’ and lingering in the sky for over an hour.
Additional accounts include a young man witnessing luminous streaks in the sky and encountering humanoid figures. Investigators documented these reports without confirming the nature of the encounters. Another incident in 1979 in Kazakhstan involved campers who claimed to have seen tall, dark figures near a wooded area, though lacking physical evidence.
The files contain sightings reported by civilians, soldiers, and technical specialists, outlining procedures for documenting testimonies and assessing possible explanations. While not proving extraterrestrial activity, the documents reveal an organized effort to investigate unusual cases.
Various entries suggest earthly reasons such as atmospheric phenomena, technical glitches, experimental aircraft, or rare natural occurrences. Some files speculate on the involvement of foreign technology, a significant concern during the Cold War era. In 1993, a well-known UFO incident in Russia involved the military allegedly downing an extraterrestrial craft in Siberia, resulting in encounters with humanoid entities and mysterious transformations.
