“Life Sentence for Radio Engineer in Child Abuse Case”

Date:

A 68-year-old man named Edward Gratwick has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 20 years for committing 38 child sexual abuse offenses. Gratwick, a radio engineer from Mitcham, south London, was arrested at Stansted Airport on March 7, 2025, as he tried to board a flight to Bucharest, Romania. He had planned to pay a mother in Romania to allow him to sexually abuse her young daughter.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) thwarted Gratwick’s plan after receiving information about his online communications discussing sexual abuse of a nine-year-old girl. They also discovered his intention to drug the child with GHB. The NCA described the chat logs found on Gratwick’s devices as among the most disturbing they had seen.

During a search of Gratwick’s residence, investigators seized electronic devices and items indicating his intent to abuse children. They found over 1,300 indecent images and videos of children on his devices, including 632 category A images. Gratwick was communicating with offenders using encrypted applications and discussing plans to sexually abuse children between six and 10 years old.

Gratwick also mentioned drugging his victims to erase memories of the abuse, referencing drugs like rohypnol and GHB. Bottles of Gamma Butyrolactone (GBL), a Class B drug, were found in his possession. Additionally, he offered to arrange the sexual abuse of young girls for others, acting as a “pimp” and taking a cut of the payments.

His charges included offenses related to arranging child sex abuse, attempting sexual communication with a child, distributing indecent images, and possessing indecent images of children. The judge criticized Gratwick for being manipulative and showed no remorse for his actions. Despite claiming to be investigating child abuse, the jury saw through his defense as a desperate attempt to avoid conviction.

Gratwick was described as a “Walter Mitty character” by his defense lawyer, who suggested there was an element of fantasy in his actions. The CPS prosecutor condemned Gratwick’s actions as abhorrent and highlighted his willingness to harm children for personal gratification.

Gratwick had previously admitted to possessing and supplying a Class B drug and was acquitted of one count of arranging a child sex offense. The offenses occurred between February 2023 and March 2025.
